More Dogs/Orkater
Title of Performance: Real Boys
Country: The Netherlands
More Dogs is a Belgian collective of writers, makers, performers and musicians who studied drama together at the Antwerp Conservatory. Individually they are all young movers & shakers on the Belgian theatre and music scene. They previously made the show Zeitgeber with Orkater/De Nieuwkomers.
About De Nieuwkomers:
Orkater/De Nieuwkomers (The Newcomers) is a talent development programme specifically geared to music-theatre. Orkater set up the Nieuwkomers programme back in 2006 in order to give young theatremakers the chance to make their own music-theatre show, under the wing of Orkater. The only two criteria for taking part are that the makers need to be professionally trained, or have a strong affinity with music-theatre. Apart from that, their plans have to involve a combination of theatre and music in some form. Whether that's pop, rock, techno, hiphop, urban or classical is entirely up to the makers themselves. Projects are then selected on their originality, productional feasibility, marketing potential and the professional artistic qualities of those involved. This initiative aims to help new music-theatre makers to develop both artistically and professionally, and enables them to set up their own company, take up a place within Orkater or within other existing structures.
About Real Boys:
More Dogs see the world around them becoming more and more artificial and watch with fascination, though not without suspicion. Confusion about what is still ‘real’ and what isn’t sparks a growing yearning for genuine experience or something authentic. They are five Pinocchios trying to become real boys. In a crazy libretto they sing about gender fluidity, pop culture, online profiling and lab meat, but also love, fake news and Pinocchio’s quest. In REAL BOYS they go head-to-head with the ‘fake’ spectacle that surrounds them.
